The DC Tulane Alumni Club, in cooperation with the Embassy of Slovenia, cordially invites you to an enchanting evening of Slovenian culture, music, cuisine, and wine at the Embassy of Slovenia on Tuesday, March 31. This is a wonderful opportunity to discover Slovenia and meet other Tulane alumni and alumnae.

The evening will begin with a short presentation about Slovenia, with a focus on Slovenian culture, geography, trade, and tourism.  A buffet of traditional Slovenian delicacies and wines will follow.  Diplomatic personnel will be in attendance and available to answer your questions.  Also featured in this event will be a performance by popular Slovenian musician Vlado Kreslin.

Vlado Kreslin is immensely popular in Slovenia, and his audiences expanded to the U.S. last summer when he was featured on tour with R.E.M..  Kreslin is something of a Slovenian institution, as a singer and songwriter who has brought about new interest in traditional ballads and songs.  Stylistically, Kreslin's songs combine Slovenian folk traditions with modern blues and rock. The result is a truly universal sound with a Slovenian spirit.  To learn more about Vlado Kreslin, please visit www.kreslin.com

The undergraduate admission receptions for admitted high school seniors and their parents will be coming to the DC area very soon!  Alumni participated in nearly all of last fall’s receptions, and we hope that you can join us to mingle and share your Tulane experiences with admitted students, their parents, and other alumni this spring.  A list of cities with locations and times where we will be holding the receptions from March 1 – April 1 can be found at the following link-http://admission.tulane.edu/SPRING%20091%20TUAF/Untitled-1.php.  The events typically last 90 minutes and alumni participation is an integral part of the program at both the beginning and end.

RSVP is required.  To RSVP, please contact Amanda McIntyre, Admission Counselor, Office of Undergraduate Admission, at amcintyr@tulane.edu  with your full name and reception city.  You will receive a confirmation within one week with more program details. For a complete description of a reception event and to learn about additional opportunities to help our alma mater, please visit http://www.admission.tulane.edu/foralumni/index.php.

The Timothy Sykes Daytrading Award for the Talented
This unique award was established six years ago by Timothy Sykes (Tulane College ’03) to recognize and nurture talented individuals whose abilities and accomplishments may not be in traditional areas of endeavor. There are many ways to be “successful” in today's society and this award acknowledges young people with unique interests and passions. This does not preclude from consideration those with significant demonstrated success in the classroom or on the playing field - it simply seeks to broaden the definition of accomplishment in a university environment.
A candidate may self-nominate or be nominated by another member of the Tulane community by means of a statement (minimum 2 pages) that describes the individual’s talent/potential and supports that description with a listing of his/her related accomplishments or an example of the applicant’s work. Nominations are open to any member of the Tulane community – student, faculty, staff or young alumni. Applications for the award will be reviewed by a committee appointed by President Cowen.

Completed nominations are due by April 17, 2009 and may be submitted by email to timsykesaward@tulane.edu or by mailing them to Tulane University Office of Development, 6823 St. Charles Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70118. Please call 504.314.7633 with any questions.

CHALLENGE GRANT OPPORTUNITIES

The Albert H. “Sonny” Small, Jr. (A&S’79) Regional Challenge Grant for Tulane Alumni Residing in the DC, Virginia, Maryland Area

Tulane alumnus Albert H. “Sonny” Small, Jr. has announced a unique opportunity for alumni in the D.C., Virginia and Maryland area making a gift to the Tulane University Rebuilding Fund. Mr. Small will match all donations, dollar for dollar*, made to the Tulane University Rebuilding Fund from alumni donors in D.C., Virginia and Maryland and those who have not yet made a gift to the Tulane Rebuilding Fund - up to $500,000 total.

This Challenge allows these alumni to give to Tulane University knowing that the amount they give will be doubled, making the impact of their individual gifts even greater. The collective impact of new gifts from alumni and matching funds from this challenge grant will provide essential support for Tulane during its rebuilding process.
Donors from these areas need only make their gift to the Rebuilding Fund.  Qualifying gifts will automatically be applied to the Albert H. “Sonny” Small, Jr. Challenge Grant.

*up to $10,000 per household
